As I conduct “Guiding the College-Bound Athlete” seminars around the country, there is one question I am always asked by student-athletes. How did my son, Coy know that Stanford was the right place for him?
The answer may be more simple than you think. After you’ve done all your homework, checked out colleges online, viewed their campus tours, looked at the curriculum they offer, and maybe even taken some “Unofficial Visits”, I’d say you’ve done your best. But now it’s time to ask yourself one simple question. Which school is right for me?
I’ll never forget when Coy was going through the recruiting process I received a call from Kyle Brady who was a highly recruited prospect from the same high school that Coy attended several years earlier. Kyle was one of the most highly recruited tight ends in the country. He eventually chose Penn State where he won a National Championship then went on to have a long and successful career in the N.F.L.
Kyle asked to meet us for breakfast at a local diner so he could explain all that Coy was about to go through his junior year in high school as a highly recruited FB prospect himself. When we asked Kyle how he knew that Penn State was the right choice for him he said it was actually very easy. He took the allowed 5 “Official Visits” his senior year and saved Penn State for last. When he arrived at Penn State and walked around the campus he actually got a “Warm, Fuzzy” feeling in the pit of his chest. It was unlike any feeling he had when he visited all the other schools. That’s how he knew that Penn State was the right place for him. So, when you get that warm fuzzy feeling for a certain college you are looking at, that just might be the one you want to commit to and attend for the next 4 or 5 years. If you don’t get that feeling……… Keep looking.
