Crate training — kindness or cruelty?

Group logo of Crate training — kindness or cruelty?

I felt the same way when I brought home my Maltipoo. I swore I’d never use a crate — it just seemed cruel. But my trainer explained that dogs actually like having their own little “den.” Once I changed how I introduced it, everything shifted. I made the crate cozy with soft blankets, a toy that smelled like me, and never locked her in unless she was calm. Within a week, she started going there on her own to nap. It became her safe zone. I even read about this approach on https://loveofpuppies.com/available-puppies/, where they explain how puppies use crates for comfort during early training. Don’t think of it as a cage — it’s their bedroom. Just never use it for punishment, and your guilt will disappear fast.
