The biological membrane that divides the interior of every cell from the external environment (the extracellular space) is called the plasma membrane, sometimes known as the cell membrane, cytoplasmic membrane, or plasmalemma in the past. It is made up of proteins encased in a lipid bilayer. The primary purpose of the cell membrane is to shield the inside of the cell from external influences. The passage of materials into and out of cells and organelles is regulated by the cell membrane. It is hence selectively permeable to organic compounds and ions.
